Walt Disney wanted a mountain and the Matterhorn was the result.
In the 1970s the ride was updated to fill in the mountain (previously
it was just an empty shell) and add the abominable snowman. Another
alteration happened in 1996 (???) when the holes that they Sky Cars
used to pass through were filled in... Does anyone know what happened
to the abominable snowman you could see from the Sky Cars? (It's
a trick question.)
Trivia: This was the first steel tube coaster in
the world. By running air pressure through the tubular track, they
could sense if there was a break anywhere. The ride is not totally
a coaster -- rotating tires give the bobsleds a push throughout
the ride similar to the Disneyland People Mover's power system.
And yes, there is a basketball hoop in the attic but it's
not so the mountain can be considered a sports arena to get around
building codes.
